Panh based his script on the experiences of American reporters Elizabeth Becker and Richard Dudman, as well as the murder of Marxist Scottish academic Malcolm Caldwell, blending the fiction with archives. His esthetic approach reflects the tension of the dangerous meeting and the historical period. Panh, perfectly conveys the journalists’ quest for truth and the dictatorship’s attempt to curtail it.
