*Bikechess is an absurd comedy about a state television reporter and cameraman tasked with ‘fabricating’ news to make the government look good. Just like the ‘new invention’ the film is named after: Cycling on the fitness bike while playing chess. Assel Aushakimova aimed to reflect the seriousness in the making of such news and preferred the actors to deliver realistic, deadpan performances in order to emphasize the wry humour. The most surprising aspect of the film is that the all the mentioned news are copied from real bulletins, they are not invented for the script! The contrast between journalistic ethics and state propaganda becomes solid in Bikechess.
